2025-02-24 10:06:00

Experts from the Budapest Gas Works, the Directorate General of Disaster Prevention and BKV inspected the metro line M2, but could not detect a cause anywhere that elicited the strong, pungent smell that had previously spread in the tunnel, so the trains will be running on the entire line again from 5:23 p.m. According to measurements during the day, there was no gas hazardous to health in the air, and the gas concentration did not exceed the threshold limit anywhere. The strong, pungent smell can no longer be perceived, the metro is operating safely, and experts are continuously monitoring the air quality.

On 21 February 2025, after 7 a.m., a strong, pungent smell was experienced at the Széll Kálmán tér station of metro line M2. Since there is no gas-powered equipment on the metro line, BKV employees investigated the cause of the unpleasant smell together with the gas company specialists and disaster management experts.

The primary investigations did not reveal the cause of the phenomenon, therefore, from 11:50, the metro traffic on line M2 was stopped between the Deák Ferenc tér station and the Örs vezér tere terminus, so that the employees of the Budapest Gas Works could continue the inspection by walking into the tunnel. Passengers were transported on the closed section by replacement buses. The inspection was completed late in the afternoon at the Keleti pályaudvar station.

The experts ascertained that the phenomenon did not originate from the metro system, metro traffic remains safe; as a result, traffic resumed from 5:23 p.m. Metro line M2 will continue to be inspected until the closure of operations, and the experts keep on conducting measurements.

BKV and BKK thank passengers travelling in the capital city for their patience.
