The renovation of the Grand Boulevard tram line is progressing according to schedule – the second phase begins

2025-07-10 13:44:00

The modernization of the tracks between Tátra utca and Jászai Mari tér is progressing in line with the previously set deadlines. In the first phase of the renovation, which started on 21 June, modernization works on the side heading toward Buda have commenced, and the reconstruction of the side heading to Pest will also begin at dawn on 9-10 July. In the next phase of the renovation, from 10 July, a change in road traffic will come into effect on the affected section of the Grand Boulevard, with two-way traffic allowed on the side leading to Buda. Under the new traffic order, cars will be able to use more lanes towards the city centre at the Pest bridgehead of Margaret Bridge. The major renovation of the track section will last until 31 July, which will enable trams to travel faster and quieter on the Szent István Boulevard section of the track.

The renovation of the section of the Grand Boulevard tram line between Tátra utca and Jászai Mari tér is progressing according to the previously determined schedule. As part of the modernization, BKV Zrt. is constructing a particular track system, in which the rails are covered with a special, elastic material. The technology used not only reduces noise and vibration, but also allows trams to pass through the affected section faster and quieter.

The track modernization began on 21 June on the side leading to Buda, and since then, the demolition, concreting, and element laying works and a significant part of the tram line track replacement have been completed. The weather conditions experienced nationwide have posed serious challenges during the work. The extremely high temperatures, as well as the large amounts of precipitation, strong winds and lightning in recent days have also influenced and limited certain work processes. However, thanks to the coordinated implementation of the contributors, the unexpected weather conditions will not cause delays in the final renovation of the section.

With the start of the second phase, the works that the specialists have already completed on the other side of the track will also begin on the side leading to Pest, i.e. demolition, foundation, element transportation and laying, substructure and track construction tasks.

Due to the next phase of construction, a traffic change will come into effect on the concerned section of the Grand Boulevard from 10 July, which differs from the previous traffic order in two important points:

  1. Road traffic – including buses – will still be able to travel on a 2x1 lane, however, instead of the southern side, the lanes will be transferred to the northern, 13th district side. The diversion points will abide at the Margaret Bridge (Margit híd) and Pannónia utca. The replacement buses will also run on this route, but their stops will not change, the location of the stops at the Vígszínház will also persist, and passengers will still be able to get on and off at the usual places.
  2. Another important change will take effect at the Pest bridgehead of Margaret Bridge: the single lane from Buda will be expanded from 10 July. A separate lane will be created for those heading towards Nyugati tér, while one lane will remain for those turning towards Balassi Bálint utca. This change will increase the throughput of the junction and is expected to reduce congestion in this direction.

For BKV Zrt. and BKK, it is a top priority that the modernization works cause as little disruption as possible to residents and passengers in the area. We appreciate the patience and understanding of residents and passengers.
