The modernization of the tram lines of Grand Boulevard will continue on Szent István Boulevard as planned Changes in traffic on Szent István Boulevard will ensue from Saturday
The renovation of the tram lines of Grand Boulevard will be pursued: according to current plans, the tracks between Szent István Boulevard, Tátra utca and Jászai Mari tér will be renewed this summer as part of the investment by BKV. From Saturday, 21 June, for more than a month, until 31 July, passengers can travel between Széll Kálmán tér and Nyugati pályaudvar with tram replacement buses instead of trams 4 and 6. Due to the renovation works, significant disruptions are expected on Szent István Boulevard; therefore, BKK and BKV request those travelling by car and bicycle to choose an alternative route when conditions permit.
Trams on the Grand Boulevard will be able to travel faster and quieter on the Szent István Boulevard section – according to preliminary plans, the modernization of the tram lines on Grand Boulevard will enter a new phase this summer. The works will last from 21 June to 31 July. As part of the BKV investment, the tracks between Jászai Mari tér and Tátra utca will be renovated. By applying modern sound and vibration damping technology, track-related speed restrictions can be lifted, tram travel times can be shortened, and the vehicles will be able to run quieter in the future.
Why the modernization is needed
Tram lines 4–6 on the Grand Boulevard are among the most frequently used public transport options in Budapest. Around 280000 people use them every day, making the Grand Boulevard tram line one of the busiest lines in the world. Low-floor trams, running every 2–3 minutes during peak hours, put additional strain on the tracks, so despite ongoing maintenance, more frequent renovations are needed than usual. The dates for renovations are determined in advance. The section between Tátra utca and the Pest bridgehead of Margaret Bridge, which is due for renovation this year, was last refurbished by BKV 15 years ago, in 2009–2010. However, in recent years, the condition of the tracks has deteriorated significantly due to heavy traffic, which also justifies the planned summer modernization.
The way(s) trams will run
Due to the renovation, the summer service of trams 4 and 6 will change from 22 June to 31 July: trams will only run to the South Buda terminuses and the temporary Jászai Mari tér terminus near the Vígszínház.
- Due to construction work at the temporary terminus, on Saturday, 21 June:
Between midnight and 12:00 noon, trams will only run between the South Buda terminuses and Oktogon M. You can travel between Oktogon M and Széll Kálmán tér M with replacement buses 4–6. - From 12:00 noon on 21 June, until 4:00 a.m. on Sunday, 22 June, trams will only run between the South Buda terminuses and Nyugati Pályaudvar. You can travel between Nyugati Pályaudvar M and Széll Kálmán tér M with replacement buses 4–6.
From 4:00 a.m. on Sunday, 22 June, prospectively until 31 July, trams 4 and 6 will run between the South Buda terminuses, i.e. Újbuda-központ M and Móricz Zsigmond körtér M, and the temporary terminus (Vígszínház) on Jászai Mari tér. Replacement buses 4-6 will run between Széll Kálmán tér M and Nyugati pályaudvar M, but it is worth changing from the tram to the replacement bus and back at the temporary terminus (Vígszínház) on Jászai Mari tér.
A note to passengers:
Replacement buses 4-6 do not stop at Margaret Island (Margitsziget) in any direction.
BKK recommends that during the renovation works, passengers arriving at Széll Kálmán tér, as well as those arriving from Óbuda by trams 17, 19 and 41 or HÉV H5, travel to the Pest city centre by metro M2 instead of the trams of Grand Boulevard.
Changes affecting other scheduled services
During the renovation works, between 21 June and 31 July,
- At Nyugati pályaudvar, the terminus of buses 91, 191 and 291 will be moved to the stop of the night line 931. During this time, passengers can board there;
- The bus stop for buses 9, 26, 91, 191, 226, 291, 923, 931 and 934 on Jászai Mari tér will be relocated to the Vígszínház, in front of Szent István körút 15 and 16, to the stop for replacement buses 4–6;
- Bus 931 into the direction Pest will stop at the designated road stop instead of the tram platform at the Buda bridgehead of Margaret Bridge (Margit híd).
Changes in road transport
The reconstruction of the Grand Boulevard tracks will also affect road traffic this summer: on Szent István körút, between Pannónia utca and the Pest bridgehead of Margaret Bridge (Margit híd), traffic will be limited to one lane in each direction. This lane will be available for public transport, bicycles and car drivers.
For the period of reconstruction, BKK recommends that cyclists primarily use the Chain Bridge and the Árpád Bridge–Margaret Island (Margitsziget)–Margaret Bridge (Margit híd) route, as the Pest side of the Margaret Bridge will only be accessible in a different way than usual.
In order to avoid congestion, BKK requests car drivers to opt for other routes during the renovation, if circumstances allow.
