The 2026 Nostalgia Season Kicks Off in Budapest

2026-04-30 12:19:00

With the arrival of warm weather, not only does nature come to life, but so do the nostalgia trains; the 2026 nostalgia season kicks off in Budapest on May 1. The city’s iconic vehicles are once again emerging from depots and vehicle facilities to take passengers on a special journey through time in the capital on weekends and special occasions.

Budapest is in an exceptional position even by European standards; thanks to the diversity of the former domestic vehicle manufacturing industry, the capital’s history of track transport, and the dedication of experts, numerous operational, original, and beautiful vintage vehicles remain available today. In addition to classic wooden- and steel-framed trams, iconic Ikarus buses, vintage trolleybuses, and old cogwheel railway cars will also hit the road in 2026.

The journey through time begins

The backbone of the nostalgia season in 2026 will once again be the tried-and-true routes:

  • The season kicks off on Friday, May 1, with the N41 tram running between Móricz Zsigmond körtér and Kamaraerdei Ifjúsági Park;
  • Starting Saturday, May 2, the N2 nostalgia tram will run every weekend on one of Budapest’s most beautiful tram lines, along the Pest side of the Danube;
  • Starting Sunday, May 10, the N18 nostalgia line will resume service once a month between Csóka utca and Szent János Kórház, featuring special one-way trams and trams with trailers;
  • The N109 downtown loop service, featuring an open-top Ikarus tram, will launch in June, offering a true summer sightseeing experience;
  • From the end of May through the end of September, the N4 bus route will also operate on Sundays, using classic Ikarus vehicles;
  • An exciting new feature this year is that passengers will be able to ride not only the Ikarus 60 bus but also its trolleybus version, the Ikarus 60T;
  • Nostalgic trolleybuses will also venture onto the capital’s roads; at the end of May, as part of Children’s Day programs connected to the City Park, three such routes will launch immediately – the N70, N74, and N75 lines;
  • According to plans, regular nostalgic trips may also begin on the cogwheel railway line this summer.

BKV and BKK Zrt. aim to schedule the nostalgia trains to coincide with public transit open houses, city events, and holiday weekends. The season doesn’t end with summer: the nostalgia trains will continue to run on the streets of Budapest until the end of October.

Tickets valid for the nostalgia routes can be purchased via the BudapestGO app, at any BKK customer service center or ticket office, or from the staff on the nostalgia routes, who now accept credit card payments.
