Special guided tours at theUnderground Railway Museum on World Tourist Guide Day
Between 19 and 22 February, BKV is offering exclusive guided tours for groups (only in Hungarian) at the Underground Railway Museum. With this program, the company is again joining in the celebration of World Tourist Guide Day this year. Registered visitors can learn about the 130-year history of the underground railway and view the temporary exhibition entitled "This is how we travel(led) – Public transport in the capital through the eyes of children."
From Thursday to Sunday, the Underground Railway Museum at Deák Ferenc tér will welcome visitors with exclusive guided tours for four days as part of the World Tourist Guide Day program series. Museum tours start at 11 a.m. every day, and visitors must register in advance on the BKV website. The guided tours can be attended with a standard admission ticket, and admission is free for children under 6 and adults over 70.
BKV Underground Railway Museum at Deák Ferenc tér is housed in a truly authentic location, an old section of the tunnel. The exhibition's artifacts, original documents, blueprints, maps, photos, and models showcase the world's first underground railway designed for electric operation. Three special, original railway carriages, numbered 1, 19 and 81, are also on display. Visitors can step inside these authentically preserved vehicles to experience first-hand how the atmosphere of the ride and passenger numbers have changed over more than a century.
The Millennium Underground Railway, which is 130 years old this year, was completed for the millennium celebrations in 1896 and is now considered a technological milestone. Only the famous London Underground is older, but there, trains were initially pulled by steam locomotives, while the Budapest underground represented the future with its electric drive from the very beginning.
Participants in the guided tour will not only be able to view the permanent exhibition but also learn how children have experienced and used public transport in the capital over the past 75 years from the temporary exhibition entitled "This is how we travel(led) – Public transport in the capital through the eyes of children".
The series of events in the capital city for World Tourist Guide Day is coordinated by Budapest Chamber of Commerce and Industry. The Underground Railway Museum joins the initiative every year, as BKV, the largest public transport provider in the capital, considers it important to preserve Budapest's rich transport heritage and make it known to as many people as possible.
