It is all about Tátra - BKV's 2025 open day series starting
On Saturday, 26 April, between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., BKV welcomes tram enthusiasts and the old and the young interested in public transport in the Angyalföld depot. The all-day event offers exciting programmes for all ages.
BKV's open days at the company’s premises regularly attract thousands of visitors. Participants of the free events can take a look into the hidden, exciting world of the capital' city’s public transport. This year, for the first time, the Angyalföld depot, built in 1896, which operates the Tátra trams that appear in various parts of the city, will open its doors (1045 Budapest, Széchenyi tér 1. – gate from Erzsébet utca). The name of the site itself is interesting, as although it is officially located in Újpest, it was named after the neighbouring district of Angyalföld, which bordered on this area.
In 1950, Újpest joined the then-created Greater Budapest as one of 23 independent settlements, within the boundaries of which the capital city’s residents still live today. The open day thus joins the Greater Budapest 75th birthday event series. On the weekend after Easter, those arriving at the depot will be treated to the usual variety of programmes on BKV open days. Vehicle exhibition
In addition to those operated at the remise, several special vehicles of the company will also be on display: UV train No. 3, "Light" T5C5 train, the so-called Recruitment tram, "traditional" 2-carriage T5C5 tram, T5C5K2 trams, heritage tram with track number 2624 and the Schörling electric work machine.
Test drive
On top of gear change adjustment, an unmissable opportunity awaits those deeply interested in tram transport: the test drive of the two-carriage ČKD Tatra T5C5 type vehicle converted into a training tram under the supervision of a railway instructor. Visitors who are over 18 years of age, have an identity card on site, and are physically able to drive a vehicle can participate in the test drive. Self-evidently, being under the influence of alcohol or any other substance is a disqualifying factor.
Guided tour
During the guided hall tour, vehicle technical experts will present some of the work being done on the site, the construction of the maintained trams, and the equipment used for their operation.
You can participate in the test drive and guided tours by registering online in advance. The registration links will be published on the official Facebook page of BKV: https://www.facebook.com/bkvzrt1
Other programmes and attractions
Within the depot area, attendees will have the opportunity to try out what it's like to travel on a freight locomotive. You can view the interactive exhibition of vehicle parts and the railway model display onboard Ganz articulated tram. The younger ones will also be treated to the BKV's unique double-articulated playbus. BKV relics and souvenirs will be also available for purchase.
