The Millennium Underground Museum at Deák Square is joining the series of events organized on the occasion of International Tourist Guide Day this year, and will be welcoming visitors with a special guided tour for four days starting on 20 February. The tickets for the tours in the morning sold out quickly, therefore, BKV is also starting groups in the afternoon, which can be attended without registration.

On the occasion of International Tourist Guide Day, guided tours and walks are held in exhibition halls and special locations in the capital city across several days, organized by the Budapest Chamber of Commerce and Industry. BKV’s Millennium Underground Museum at Deák Square has also joined this event, which, from year to year, welcomes the old and the young wishing to hear interesting stories and learn about the history of the Millennium Underground Railway since 1896. The special guided tours will take place over four days, from 20 February (Thursday) to 23 February (Sunday). The museum tours announced on the BKIK website were booked out in a few days, hence, BKV decided to start groups in the afternoon as well. From Thursday to Sunday, from 2:00 p.m., visitors may acquaint themselves with the 129-year history of the underground railway with an expert guide. In order to participate in the guided tours, no prior registration but purchasing a regular ticket is required. Those interested are requested to arrive 10 minutes before the announced time.

During the museum walk, attendees can see the permanent exhibition presenting the Millennium Underground Railway, which was created in a truly authentic environment, in an old tunnel section, in 1975. By stepping into the long-lived vehicles of the transport museum celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, anyone can feel the atmosphere of bygone eras, in addition, tangible relics, original documents, blueprints, maps, photos and models help you get to know the first underground railway on the European continent, which is considered a technical milestone in the world. Those who cannot attend the event now, or would like to arrive prepared, can also take a virtual tour of the museum on the BKV website.

Before or after the guided tour, visitors can see an exhibition dedicated to one of the oldest, but still operating means of transport in Budapest. The history of the Svábhegy (Swabian Hill) cogwheel comes to life with rich visual material, models, former steering wheels and dashboards, tickets, passes and fares from the time. The 150-year history of “Fogas” (’Cog’) transport is also commemorated by old timetable signs, posters, maps, passenger information leaflets, former driver uniforms and postcards over 100 years old.
