Another infrastructure improvement has been completed for the operation of CAF trams

Modernization work at BKV’s Ferencváros tram depot was completed ahead of schedule. The loop track has been renovated, making it suitable for the temporary storage of the new CAF trams. Following the successful test run, trams arriving at and departing from the depot are once again operating as usual.

The loop track is a key element of tram depot operations: it enables the safe and rapid turning of vehicles, and it is through this track that trams enter service and return to the depot. All of this not only aids daily operations but also helps maintain the schedule. Over the years, the rail and ballast elements have worn out, making their renovation and replacement necessary. When repairing the loop track, BKV experts also ensured that the modern CAF trams (continuously arriving in Budapest) could operate reliably on the new track section – meaning that the rear storage track at the Ferencváros tram depot is also capable of accommodating the new vehicles.

The CAF trams are low-floor, larger in size, and heavier, so the existing infrastructure must be adapted to meet the new technical and operational requirements. The 34- and 56-meter trams weigh up to 41 and 67 tons, respectively, and their low-floor design imposes stricter requirements on infrastructure components. The repair work involved approximately 204 meters of paved track and 108 meters of curved double-track open track; when designing the track structure and pavement, experts ensured that it met the special requirements of low-floor trams.

Due to the new CAF trams, the renewal of the supporting infrastructure is necessary at several locations. A major renovation of the Ferencváros tram depot is in the planning phase; the Budapest Transport Center (BKK) signed the contract for this in April. Until funds become available, BKV will operate the new-generation tram fleet with temporary improvements and modifications. Part of this is the current track renovation at the Ferencváros tram depot, so the CAF trams can already be temporarily parked on the rear storage tracks.
